Significant Days in India

A number, which isn’t very significant, but makes the whole year is 365.  All the 365 days of the year are full of life and happenings for all of us. Some of these days are made significant by us for the celebrations, the discoveries inventions and establishments done on these days. Some days have made their names in the history as some thing drastic or great has happened on those days. 

Each country has its own ways to celebrate the days and its own significant days reserved for them. For example 15th August is a day well remembered by the Indians, but for Americans it is just a normal day.  Here we have tabulated the important significant days of India. It has been tried to note only those days in India’s section which are significant for India. It has been tried that none of the day is left.

January

  • 1st January- Not only India, the 1st January is the day celebrated as New Year’s Day as it is the 1st Day of Gregorian Calendar being followed by the whole world.

  • 9th January– The day is celebrated as NRI day (Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas). The day is being celebrated from the year 2001 to commemorate the contribution of NRIs for development of India.
  • 10th January is celebrated as World Hindi Day from the year 2006 in order to promote Hindi World wide.
  • 12th January is celebrated as National Youth Day from the year 1985. It is the Birth Date of Swami Vivekananda and is also known as Vivekananda Jayanti.
  • 15th January is the Army Day. This day is celebrated as army day as on this day in the year 1949 Field Marshal M Kariappa took charge from General Fransis Butcher, the last British Army Chief in India.
  • 25th January is celebrated as National Voter day. This day is being celebrated to encourage young voters from the year 2011 to mark Commission’s foundation Day.
  • 26th January is National Republic Day. It was the day when Government of India Act 1935 was replaced by The Constitution of India in the year 1950.
  • 30th January is the Martyr’s day. On this Day Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated  in the year 1948.

February

  • 10th February : Celebrated as National Deworming Day. It is being celebrated from the year 2015 to deworm all children from age 1 to 19.
  • 12th February: National Productivity Day. The day is being celebrated to commemorate the  formation of National Productivity Council in the year 1958.  It is celebrated to create awareness about national productivity and is a theme based celebration.
  • 24th February: It is celebrated as Central Excise Day to honor the CBEC(Central Board of Excise and Custom) Officers. On this day the Central Excise and Salt act was enacted in 1944.
  • 28th February: The day 28th February is celebrated as National Science Day.  It is celebrate to mark the discovery of Raman Effect by Indian Physicist Sir CV Raman. 

March

  • 4th March: National Security Day. It is the day to honor Indian Security Forces. The day was first celebrated in 1972. It is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of National Security Council in the year 1966.
  • 16th March: National Vaccination Day, also called the National Immunization Day, is celebrated every year on March 16 to convey the importance of vaccination to the entire nation. The day was first observed in the year 1995, the year on which India started Pulse Polio Programme.
  • 18th March: Ordnance Factory Day. The production of India’s oldest Ordnance Factory, which is at Cossipore of Kolkata, was started on the 18th March, 1802. The Ordnance factory is termed as the fourth arm of defense.

April

  • 1st April: Utkal Diwas: The day is also called Odisha Day. In 1936, Bihar and Odisha province were reorganized to form Odisha.
  • 5th April: National Maritime Day. The first celebration took place in 1964 to spread awareness about intercontinental commerce and the economy. Indian Shipping started on the year 1919 on this date only.
  • 11th April: National Safe Motherhood Day. In 2003, the Indian Government declared the anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi as National safe Motherhood day. It is the day celebrated to raise awareness about care during pregnancy. 
  • 14th April: Fire Brigade Day, also called as National Fire Service Day  is observed every year to pay homage to the incredible commitment and sacrifice by the 71 Fire Service personnel during an unfortunate mishap in 1944 on this day.
  • 15th April: Himachal Day. On this day Himachal Pradesh was carved out as a category C state of India in 1948.
  • 21st April: National Civil Service Day. It is the day celebrated for the civil servants to rededicate themselves to the cause of citizen and renew their commitments to public service and excellence in work.
  • 24th April: National Panchayati Raj Day. The Day is celebrated to commemorate the day on which the 73rd Constitutional Amendment was passed in 1992. It is being celebrated from the year 2010.
  • 30th April: Ayushman Bharat Diwas. The day aims to promote affordable medical facilities in remote areas of the country based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census database.

May

  • 1st May: Maharashtra Day. On this Day, in 1960, Bombay Reorganization act came into effect.
  • 11th May: National Technology Day. The day was first observed on May 11, 1999. The day was chosen because on this day India successfully broke into the elite group of countries with nuclear weapons. 
  • 21st May: Anti Terrorism Day, the death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. In 1991. On this day he was assassinated by terrorists while campaigning for the Congress party at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

June

  • Many International Days are celebrated on this month, but none of the national days or days of importance in India are there on this month.

July

  • 1st July National Doctor’s Day, is celebrated on this day to commemorate the birth anniversary of renowned Physician and 2nd chief minister of West Bengal Dr. B C Roy.
  • 26th July: Vijay Diwas (Kargil). This day is celebrated as Vijay Diwas as on this day India was declared victorious after Kargil War.

August

  • 9th  August: Quit India Day.
  • 15th August:  National Independence Day.
  • 20th August: National Good will Day (Sadbhawana Diwas) is celebrated to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, former PM of India.
  • 29th August: National Sports Day , is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Olympian Major Dhyan Chand ji, the famous Hockey player of India.

September

  • 5th September Teachers Day is celebrated on this day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President of India.
  • 14th September: This day is celebrated as Hindi Day marking the declaration of Hindi language as official language of Union government of India.
  • 15th September: Engineer’s Day, is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya, not only in India , but also in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

October

  • 2nd October:  Gandhi Jayanti is the national Festival of India and is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.
  • 8th October: National Air Force Day, is the day when India Air Force was established on the year 1932 as auxiliary air force.
  • 10th October: National Post Day, The Day aims to commemorate the role played by the Indian postal department for the past 150 years, which was founded in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie.
  • 27th October: National Infantory day is celebrated to October 27 as it was on this day that an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribes who were supported by Pakistan Army
  • 31st October: Rashtriya Ekta Diwas(National Unity Day)  is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Iron Man of India.

November

  • 7th November: National Cancer Awareness Day, The day highlights the significance of increased awareness about cancer prevention and early detection for the general public.
  • 9th November:National Legal Service Day is celebrated to spread awareness for ensuring reasonable fair and justice procedure for all citizens.
  • 14th November: National Children’s Day is celebrated to commemorate the Birth anniversary of 1st Prime minister of India.
  • 17th November: National Epilepsy Day  is observed every year to generate awareness among people about epilepsy.
  • 18th November: Sapper’s Day is celebrated as on this day  the Groups of Bengal and Bombay Sappers were  merged on 18 November 1932 to form the Corps of Engineers. This day is celebrated as Corps of Engineers Day every year.
  • 19th November: National Integration Day is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of the country’s first-ever female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi and is also called the Quami Ekta Diwas.
  • 26th November National Law Day On 26 November 1949, the constituent assembly of India adopted to the Constitution of India.

December

  • 2nd December: National Pollution prevention Day. India observes National Pollution Prevention Day on December 2 in the memory of people who lost their lives in Bhopal gas disaster.
  • 4th December: Navy Day Every year, India celebrates December 4 as Navy Day to commemorate Operation Trident – a key offensive during the 1971 India-Pakistan War, when the Indian Navy inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani vessels in Karachi harbor.
  • 7th December: The Armed Forces Flag Day is a day dedicated to India towards collection of funds from people of India for the welfare of the Indian Army personal.
  • 14th December: National Energy Conservation Day,The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Union ministry of power annually celebrates December 14 as the National Energy Conservation Day to showcase India’s contribution to energy conservation and steps taken towards becoming an energy-efficient nation.
  • 16th December: Vijay Diwas,  this day marks the decisive victory over Pakistan in 1971, which resulted in the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation of the new state of Bangladesh.
  • 18th December: Minorities Right Day is celebrated to safeguard the Constitutionally-guaranteed rights of religious minorities in the country.
  • 22nd December: National Mathematics Day is celebrated on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.

  • 23rd December: Kisan Diwas, is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Farmer turned  5th PM of India Choudhary Charan Singh.
  • 24th December: National Consumer Rights Day, On this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the president. The enactment of this Act is considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country
