The most beautiful places on this Earth are still unleashed. As it is said that, “unheard songs are always melodious”, same is the case with some places in this world. Where is Bakloh? Let us hear it from a local who has been here from the last 4 decades. Bakloh is one of the unseen and non visited places of Himachal Pradesh. Unseen places are a fun to explore and its really fun to be here. Once a favorite station of British Officers, Bakloh has lost it’s sheen. Presently it is only searched by the people who get their hard posting or transfers here. The government offices like Kendriya Vidyalaya Bakloh, The office of Cantonment Board Bakloh or the schools of Cantonment board along with the army personal posted here will only search for this place. And they will search it till they have reached here. Let us reach Bakloh from all the directions and means possible.
WHERE IS BAKLOH? The answer for this question is very simple for those who have reached here once. Bakloh can be reached via many means and directions. But reaching here for the first time is difficult, if you don’t have any contacts here. I know several persons who reached Chamba, the District in which Bakloh Lies and then came back on the same way to reach Bakloh. They would have reached Bakloh 6 hours earlier, if they would have contacted any person out here. Bakloh is in Bhattiyat Constituency and Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh. It is a small cantonment area with around 4000 people living here. It’s mainly a defense area and if you reach here, you will find yourself surrounded with army persons or the persons who have served in the Indian army once in their life. It is a cool place with no crowd and pleasant weather. 32.4725° N, 75.9245°E are the location coordinates of Bakloh.
Now let us attempt to reach here via train. The nearest railway station for reaching Bakloh is Pathankot Cantt. Railway station(PTKC). It is 60 kilometer away from Bakloh and is in Punjab. From Pathankot one can reach Bakloh via bus or via taxi. For the first timers, one can choose the option of taxi because direct bus from Pathankot is only one and that too is not available presently. A taxi will charge around Rs. 2000/- (30 $) from you.
If one wants to come here via bus, he will have to board a bus from Pathankot Bus stand or Pathankot Bye pass having either of the two routes: Pathankot- Chamba or Pathankot- Dalhousie. The frequency of buses to these two routes is 4 buses in an hour from 2:30 am to 5:30 pm. Night buses don’t run in this route due to mountainous and curved roads.After boarding the bus, you will have to take ticket to Tunuhatti, a toll tax and forest barrier in the border of Punjab and Himachal. From Tunuhatti, Bakloh is just 6 km away and Bakloh can be reached via taxi as no buses run on this route. Taxi charges are Rs.250 for one side trip.
Being a place situated at Mountains, If you are planning to reach here via flight, then nearest Airport is again Pathankot. But number of flights coming are very limited and no guarantee that the flight may get cancelled due to any unavoidable reason. The next nearest Airport is at Gaggal, Kangra which is 100 km away from Bakloh which is again an airport with limited facilities and less frequency of flights. People opting to come from abroad find the Amritsar air port (Raja Sansi Airport) as the most suitable one. It is 185 km away from Bakloh, and people who visit Bakloh from Amritsar opt for taxi to reach our place.
One can reach Bakloh via Bus too. Many buses of HRTC run from Delhi to Chamba or Delhi to Dalhousie. Both routes have Tunuhatti as their halt. One can reach Tunuhatti directly and thereafter catch a taxi to reach bakloh. Some bus routes are such that one can reach Bakloh more easily. The routes are same, but the path they take is a little different. If the buses designated to reach Dalhousie or Chamba is through Himachal and they don’t go to Pathankot then you can halt at Kakira a small town adjoining Bakloh and is just 2 km away from Bakloh. From Kakira you have the option to take taxi or reach Bakloh on foot.
Bakloh can be reached from Kangra, Dharamshala, Mandi and other big places of Himachal Pradesh via bus. Many buses run from these places to Chamba or Dalhousie. If someone wants to reach Bakloh then he/she must take a ticket of Kakira, from where Bakloh is just 2 km. Bakloh is just 100km away from Dharamshala, 70 km away from Chamba, 25 km away from Dalhousie and 35 km away from Khajjiyar. Dalhousie, Khajjiyar the famous hill stations of Himachal can be visited from Bakloh in a day, if your stay is at Bakloh.
Bakloh is rather a less talked about place of Himachal, but it is a Photographer’s paradise. The stay availability at Bakloh is very less and is dependent upon one PWD rest house at Kakira, two Forest Rest Houses at Ghatasani, and a newly built ETU Homestay 10 km away from Bakloh.
